Following a career-best haul of 6 for 19 in the first ODI against England at The Kennington Oval on Tuesday, India's speed bowler Jasprit Bumrah reclaimed the top spot in the ICC Men's ODI Player Rankings on Wednesday.
After holding the top place for the majority of the previous two years, Bumrah had fallen behind Trent Boult of New Zealand in February 2020. More than any other Indian and ninth-most in history, he has held the position of leadership for a total of 730 days.
Bumrah is only the second Indian bowler, after Kapil Dev, to hold the top spot in the ODI rankings. He has previously held the position in T20Is and is now in a career-best third place in Tests. The other top-ranked Indian bowlers are Maninder Singh, Anil Kumble, and Ravindra Jadeja.
Mohammad Shami, Bumrah's partner with the new ball, also benefits after taking 3/31 and contributing to the dismissal of England for 110 in 25.2 overs. Shami and teammate Bhuvneshwar Kumar are now tied for 23rd place after moving up three spots.
After leading the team to their target in just 18.4 overs, the Indian opening batting combination also has some room for growth. With his quick-fire 76 not out, captain Rohit Sharma closed the distance with third-placed Virat Kohli to just one rating point, and left-hander Shikhar Dhawan moved up one spot to 12th after scoring an unbeaten 31.
English captain Jos Buttler has climbed one spot to 24th in the most recent weekly rankings update, which also takes into account performances in the first two Ireland versus New Zealand matches that are a part of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League and the first West Indies versus Bangladesh match. Buttler led England in scoring with 30.
After scoring 117 in the final game of a three-T20I series against England, India's Suryakumar Yadav has climbed 44 spots in the ICC Men's T20I Player Rankings, giving him a career-high fifth place. After scoring a match-winning 74 runs unbeaten in the final game of the series against Bangladesh, Nicholas Pooran of the West Indies has moved up five spots to eighth place.
Following a 3/15 performance in the second T20I in Birmingham, India's Bhuvneshwar Kumar has climbed seven spots to a career-best seventh place, while Yuzvendra Chahal has moved up two spots to 19th. Bumrah moved up six spots to 27th, and Harshal Patel moved up ten spots to 23rd.
