Former New Zealand cricketer John Wright was appointed as the president of the Derbyshire Cricket Club. On Wednesday the club revealed the news when the cricket world is taking a break due to the Covid-19.
Wright replaced Harold Rhodes who was the president of the club over the past year. The Kiwi player featured in 14 Tests for New Zealand and played 31 One Day International cricket matches as well. He worked as a successful coach for various sides at both international and domestic levels. His most memorable stunt was with the Indian cricket team in the early 2000s when he took the charge of the young Indian cricket team along with the skipper Sourav Ganguly. The duo went on to change the face of Indian cricket. Wright also served the IPL team Mumbai Indians and worked closely with their core.
Interesting Wright was a key batsman for Derbyshire during his cricket days. In past he also worked with the club as a coach in 2017. Now welcoming the new role, Wright said,”I hold Derbyshire very close to my heart and I am honoured to serve as Club President. I enjoyed so many great times here as a player and as a coach, and I wish the current squad the very best as they continue to make great progress on the field.”
On the other hand, speaking about the appointment, Derbyshire chairman Ian Morgan said: “John is one of the greatest batsmen to ever play for Derbyshire, scoring more than 14,000 runs for the club. Even when his playing days ended, John kept a close relationship with the club and enjoyed success in his return as a coach. His contribution and commitment to the Club over many years has been immense and I am delighted that he has accepted the role of Club Pres
