Australian paceman Josh Hazlewood, who has had the opportunity to play alongside Virat Kohli in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has unveiled the secret behind the Indian cricket star's success ahead of the ICC World Test Championship Final. Hazlewood, who will be aiming to dismiss Kohli when Australia faces India in the highly-anticipated final, has closely observed Kohli's game over the past two years and identified his exceptional work ethic as the key factor that sets him apart.
The 32-year-old Australian, who has shared the dressing room with Kohli at Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), attributes Kohli's dedication to fitness and his relentless practice in batting and fielding as the factors that elevate him to the status of one of the best batsmen in the world.
Hazlewood spoke highly of Kohli's work ethic, stating, "I think it's probably how hard he works (that stands out). His fitness first of all - and then his skill work and batting and fielding in particular. He is always out there (training) first and leaves last – and the intensity he trains at all the time is at such a high level it drags everyone else along for the ride. That can leak on to the other players and improve them as well," as he shared with the ICC.
While Hazlewood aims to challenge Kohli on the field, he also acknowledged the impressive performances of his IPL teammate, Mohammed Siraj, who will be representing India in the World Test Championship Final. Hazlewood praised Siraj's recent form and highlighted his ability to perform well with the red-ball, having been the leading wicket-taker for RCB in the recently concluded IPL season.
As Hazlewood recovers from a side issue that cut short his IPL campaign, he is determined to regain full fitness and face the Indian team, against whom he boasts an excellent record. Hazlewood holds the record for the most five-wicket hauls in Tests against India (five) and has had remarkable success in England, claiming 36 wickets from eight matches at an impressive average of 23.58.
Reflecting on his extensive experience against India, Hazlewood expressed his curiosity about facing them in England, which poses a different challenge compared to playing them in Australia or India. He emphasized the excitement surrounding the upcoming encounter and the eagerness of both teams to test their skills in a new environment.
With Hazlewood's insights into Kohli's work ethic and his impressive track record against India, the World Test Championship Final promises to be a thrilling clash between two cricketing powerhouses.
