Virat Kohli’s 50th Test match as Captain turned out to be quite an eventful affair for him. Not only he brought up his career-best score of 254*, a knock which powered India to a thumping win by an innings and 137 runs over South Africa, Kohli also went on to achieve the third-best success rate for any skipper in Tests who has led his side in at least 50 Tests.
The 30-year-old has led India to 30 victories which sum up to a win percentage of 60. Only two captains in the history of Test cricket, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting, have had better win percentages- 74 and 70 respectively, after 50 Test matches.
Waugh retired with 57 Tests to his name as captain. He won 41 matches, drew 7 and lost 9 games, thus, finishing with a win percentage of 71.92. Ponting, on the other hand, went on to lead Australia in a total of 77 Tests. He won 48, drew 13 and lost 16 games. His win percentage stands at 62.33.
Out of Kohli’s 30 victories as skipper, 17 have come in 23 home games whereas 13 wins have come in 27 overseas matches. He has many years of Test cricket left in him and it remains to be seen where he finishes in the list of all-time great leaders.
