Kusal Perera returns to the ODI squad, joined by Mohamed Shiraz, as Sri Lanka gears up to face New Zealand in a mix of T20Is and ODIs starting November 9.

Kusal Perera's inclusion in the Sri Lankan One Day International squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand marks a significant event, especially since he has not participated in an ODI for nearly a year. The decision to select Perera comes on the heels of his impressive performance in a recent T20 International against West Indies, where he scored an unbeaten 55 runs. This vital knock underscores his potential as a key player in the team, and selectors are hopeful that he can transfer his T20 form into the ODI format.

Alongside Perera, seamer Mohamed Shiraz has also been named in the ODI squad. Shiraz, aged 29, has demonstrated remarkable prowess in domestic cricket, with an impressive total of 84 wickets at an average of 18.75 in List A matches. Despite his domestic success, Shiraz has had limited international exposure, having bowled only four overs in his international career to date. His inclusion reflects the selectors' commitment to blend experience with emerging talents.

The recently announced T20 International squad remains unchanged from the winning combination that faced West Indies, where Sri Lanka secured a 2-1 series victory. Among the retained players is newcomer Chamindu Wickramasinghe, an allrounder who has shown promise in both batting and bowling departments. Another notable mention in the squad is Dinesh Chandimal, who continues to be included despite not having participated in international white-ball formats since 2022. Chandimal's domestic performances have been commendable, and his experience is expected to add depth to the squad.

Sri Lanka's batting lineup retains its core, featuring established players such as Kusal Mendis, Kamindu Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, and Charith Asalanka. This stable group forms the backbone of the batting order, with expectations that they can deliver effective performances. In the T20 format, Bhanuka Rajapaksa serves as the designated middle-order hitter, while Janith Liyanage brings a different style to the ODI squad. Liyanage is recognized for his ability to build innings; he is also a capable contributor with the ball, offering an additional seam bowling option.

The spin bowling department continues to feature seasoned players, including Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana. These bowlers have demonstrated effectiveness in both T20 and ODI formats. Additionally, Jeffrey Vandersay and Dunith Wellalage are part of both squads, providing more depth in the spin department.

Significant distinctions exist in the seam bowling selections. Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, and Binura Fernando have been selected exclusively for the T20I squad and will not feature in ODIs. Conversely, Dilshan Madushanka and Shiraz are included in the ODI squad but have not been selected for T20 matches. Asitha Fernando is one player retained in both formats, providing versatility in the bowling attack.

The upcoming series will feature a total of six matches, comprised of three T20 Internationals and three One Day Internationals. Four matches will take place in Dambulla, while the remaining two ODIs are scheduled for Pallekele. This series presents a critical opportunity for Sri Lanka to further develop their squad and to assess the capabilities of newly included players. The first match of the series is set to commence on November 9.
