Due to the island nation's current economic situation, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced on Sunday that the Lanka Premier League 2022 has been postponed with immediate effect. The event, which was to have been the third league instalment, was slated to take place from August 1 to 21.
The Lanka Premier League 2022, which was slated to take place from August 1 to August 21 in 2022, has been postponed with immediate effect, according to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
According to a statement from SLC, "This decision was reached in response to a request made by the Innovative Production Group FZE (IPG), the rights holder of the event, who highlighted the country's current "economic situation" as not favourable to hosting the tournament.
The five-team tournament will begin with matches at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo before moving to the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota, according to a statement from SLC made earlier this year in June.
Sri Lanka had just hosted Australia for a multi-format series despite the situation. Both sides played excellent cricket in the highly competitive series. Sri Lanka won the ODI series 3-2, Australia won the T20I series 2-1, while the Warne-Murli Trophy in the Test series was split as the two-match series concluded in a 1-1 draw.
With surging inflation and a serious lack of petrol and other necessities, Sri Lanka is currently experiencing its greatest economic crisis. Government offices and schools have been forced to close indefinitely due to a lack of oil supplies.
The first edition of the LPL was held in 2020, followed by the second in 2021. Both editions of the tournament have been won by Jaffna Kings (earlier Stallions), with Galle Gladiators ending as runners-up on both occasions.
