When India take on Bangladesh in their maiden Day/Night Test at the Eden Gardens on Friday, Indian opener Mayank Agarwal will have the chance of equaling Australian legend Don Bradman’s record of being the second fastest to score 1000 Test runs.
Agarwal now has 858 Test runs to his name in 12 innings at a scintillating average of 71.50. All he will need is 142 runs more to equal Bradman’s record of reaching the milestone in 13 innings.
Everton Weekes of West Indies and Herbert Sutcliffe of England hold the record for being the joint-fastest to the landmark. Both of them scored their 1000th Test run in the 12th innings of their respective careers.
The 28-year-old could also become the fastest Indian to achieve the feat overtaking Vinod Kambli who holds the record for reaching the landmark currently in 14 innings. Kambli achieved the milestone in India’s match against the West Indies at Mumbai in 1994.
Cheteshwar Pujara (18), Sunil Gavaskar (21), Sanjay Manjrekar (23), Rahul Dravid (23) and Sourav Ganguly (23) are the next fastest Indians in this list.
Agarwal is coming into this match on the back of a splendid knock of 243 runs which powered India to a massive win over Bangladesh by a margin of an innings and 130 runs. And he would want to carry this form forward into the second match in Kolkata.
