Chants of ‘Thala’ reverberated all across Chennai on Sunday night and more so on Monday when MS Dhoni took to his beloved Chepauk, dressed in yellow, as he took to his first practice session for Chennai Super Kings, ahead of IPL 2020.

Sources at the stadium told cricketnews.com that close to two thousand people were present at the practice session which had Murali Vijay, Ambatti Rayudu, KS Asif, Karn Sharma, Piyush Chawla and MS Dhoni take part in a net session. While Vijay and Rayudu took to the nets and were welcome by a crowd, the whistles and cheers were saved for MS Dhoni who took to part in an international cricket level practice session after nearly seven months.
Dhoni initially took on some quick bowlers in the nets. He looked at ease versus them as he played straight batted shots. But the show was reserved for a little later, post the rest of the batters going at it, when Dhoni asked for just the spinners to bowl. The 38-year-old stepped out to hit Karn Sharma and Piyush Chawla over mid-wicket and long-on repeat and cleared the boundary with ease, much to the delight of spectators, net bowlers and ball-boys alike. The delight on every person present at the stadium was evident as their captain returned to business as usual. Later in the night, Suresh Raina landed in Chennai and the vice-captain was greeted with a hug by his captain.
Various videos have emerged of Dhoni in the gym and on the field, revealing that he is in terrific shape and tonking the ball with much ease. It would be interesting to see how Dhoni approaches this IPL as a batter and if he indeed does well, there will be much chatter about him making a comeback into the Indian setup for the T20 World Cup.
