Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh thinks MS Dhoni should be given time to take the final call on his retirement. He also thinks that it will take a lot of time to find a replacement of Dhoni.
Yuvraj Singh who took retirement from international cricket last year said, “I think it’s unfair to him. The guy (Dhoni) has done so much for Indian cricket. He has been the most successful Indian captain, so you got to give him time. He needs to decide when he wants to go out. He needs to take that call. If he wants to still play, that’s his call and we need to respect that.”
On the sidelines of ‘The Sports Movement’ summit, Yuvraj further added that one should not compare Rishabh Pant with Dhoni. He opined, “It is unfair to compare him with MS. MS Dhoni was not made in a day. It took a few years so it will take a few years for a replacement also.”
India’s hero of 2011 World Cup was asked about Rishabh Pant. The young wicket keeper already is under scanner mainly due to his shot selection. But Yuvraj believes that the people monitoring him have a lot to work on the same. “How they get the best out of Pant is completely based on his character. You have to understand his psychology and then work with that. If you are going to suppress him, you won’t get the best out of him.Yes, he has been given a number of chances but how do you get the best out of him. The people monitoring him in the team — the coaches, the captain — can make a lot of difference.”
He further suggested, “He needs to be spoken to and somebody needs to get the best out of him. Criticising him is not the solution but I’m very keen to see who speaks to him and helps him understand better. There is no point in comparing him to MS Dhoni. It’s taken many years to become MS.”
