Bangladesh continued to dominate as they negotiated the New Zealand attack without much trouble on Day 3 of the first Test at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. They ended the day on 401/6, and are currently ahead by 73 runs in the first innings, with Yasir Ali and Mehidy Hasan Miraz at the crease.
Resuming on an overnight 70, Mahmudul Hasan Joy could only add eight runs before getting out to Neil Wagner. Joy flashed hard at a ball way outside off stump, only to edge it to Will Young. Trent Boult then bowled Mushfiqur Rahim to reduce Bangladesh to 203/4.
Mominul Haque, dropped by Kylie Jamieson off his own bowling, went on to add 158 for the fifth wicket with Liton Das. They showed great composure in dealing with the probing Wagner and Boult.
Jamieson, Tim Southee, and Rachin Ravindra did not pose much trouble as Bangladesh set a new record for batting 156 overs in an overseas Test match. Previously, they have batted 152 overs in New Zealand in 2017.
Liton and Mominul reached their respective half-centuries after lunch. Boult then pinned Mominul leg-before for 88. Liton too departed a few moments later, after edging to Tom Blundell off Boult.
Brief scores: New Zealand 328 (Devon Conway 122; Shoriful Islam 3-69) trail Bangladesh 401/6 (Mominul Haque 88; Trent Boult 3-61) by 73 runs.
