New Zealand closed Day 1 on 258/5 against Bangladesh in the first Test match at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. They rode on Devon Conway's 122 to dominate the opening two sessions. However, Bangladesh picked up three wickets in the final session to keep themselves in the hunt.
Bangladesh got off to a decent start after Mominul Haque won the toss and asked New Zealand to bat. Shoriful Islam had Tom Latham caught behind in the fourth over. Devon Conway and Will Young (52) then added 138 for the second wicket before the latter was run out by Najmul Hossain Shanto in the 49th over. Young had nicked Shoriful on 27, but neither Liton Das nor Shoriful appealed.
New Zealand moved to 147/2 at tea, with Conway on 88 alongside Ross Taylor. Playing his last Test series, Taylor was watchful until he mistimed Shoriful a drive to Shadman Islam for 31. Conway went on to reach his second Test hundred. With that, he became the first to score hundreds on the opening days of both home and away Test matches.
Conway added 38 with Henry Nicholls before Mominul brought himself into the attack and removed him in the 80th over. Tom Blundell and Nicholls (32*) seemed comfortable against the second new ball until the former was cleaned up by Ebadot Hossain in the last ball of the day.
