After a historic win in Mount Maunganui in the first Test match, Bangladesh were in tatters inside Day 2 of the second Test against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. They were bundled out for 126 in 41.2 overs after New Zealand declared on 521/6. New Zealand, ahead by 395 runs, are likely to enforce the follow-on and mop things up by Day 3.
Trent Boult did the most damage for New Zealand, with 5-43. In the process, he claimed 300 wickets in the format on his 75th match. Of New Zealanders, only Richard Hadlee, Daniel Vettori and Tim Southee have reached the landmark before him. Southee took 3-22 and Kyle Jamieson 2-32.
Bangladesh’s top five – Shadman Islam, Mohammad Naim, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque and Litton Das – managed to score only 19 between them. Yasir Ali (55) and Nurul Hasan (41) – the only Bangladesh batters to reach double digits – at least took them past hundred.
Earlier, Tom Latham and Devon Conway resumed the day at 349/1. Conway, 99 overnight, reached his third Test hundred off the first ball ball of the day, but Mehidy Hasan Miraz ran him out shortly afterwards.
Then came Ross Taylor, to a standing ovation from the crowd and a guard of honour from the Bangladesh fielders in his last Test match. He made 28 before Ebadot Hossain had him caught behind. It may turn out to be his final innings in this format.
New Zealand slipped from 411/2 to 423/5 in quick time. After Taylor, both Henry Nicholls and Daryl Mitchell fell cheaply, to Ebadot (2-143) and Shoriful Islam (2-79) respectively. Tom Blundell (57*) and Latham then steadied the ship with an aggressive 76-run stand for the sixth wicket.
Latham fell shortly after reaching 250, to Mominul, but after becoming only the second New Zealander, after Stephen Fleming, to reach the milestone twice. His 252 is also the highest score by a New Zealand captain while opening batting. Latham eventually declared on 521/6.
