It did not take New Zealand even an hour on Day 4 to seal the Edgbaston Test match. England succumbed to their first-ever series defeat at home since 2014. This is also the third time New Zealand has won a Test series in England, after 1986 and 1999.
Considering what transpired a day before, the action on Day 4, in all sense, was little more than a formality. It was always a matter of for how long the last batting pair dragged the game that has already slipped from their grasp.
England resumed the day on an overnight tally of 122/9. Trent Boult wrapped up things with the first ball of the morning, inducing an edge off Olly Stone to Tom Blundell.
Matt Henry, who came in for Kyle Jamieson, and Neil Wagner picked up three wickets apiece. Boult and Ajaz Patel had two each. Henry finished the match with six wickets in all.
New Zealand chased down the target of 38 runs inside 11 overs, losing Devon Conway and Will Young. Both men had scored 80s in the first innings.
Stuart Broad got the better of Conway, while Stone hit Young through the gates. Broad and James Anderson gave their heart and soul throughout the match. Despite their age, they bowled over 60 overs in the game between them. While Anderson had only a wicket to show for, Broad got five wickets in the match.
Conway was adjudged Player of the Series in his maiden appearance. He amassed 306 runs in two matches at an astounding average of 76.50.
