New Zealand recovered from a poor start to win the second ODI, in Hamilton to beat the Netherlands by 118 runs. With that, they took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
The teams made one change apiece in the bowling department. New Zealand brought in Doug Bracewell for Matt Henry, whilst Aryan Dutt replaced Philippe Boissevain for the Dutch.
Netherlands who won the toss, opted to bowl, and were soon among the wickets, reducing New Zealand to 32/5 inside 10 overs.
Frederick Klaassen got the ball rolling when he had Martin Guptill for six. Logan van Beek then accounted for Will Young for just a run. Henry Nicholls made 19 before he became van Beek’s second victim. Van Beek then hung on to a ball off Klaassen to dismiss Ross Taylor. When Michael Bracewell also went cheaply, the Dutch had dreams of rolling over the New Zealand quickly.
But Tom Latham who rescued New Zealand with a captain’s innings. He combined with Colin de Grandhomme in a sixth-wicket partnership of 57. De Grandhomme ultimately fell for 16, caught off captain Pieter Seelar.
That brought Doug Bracewell to the crease and he provided Latham with the support he needed. They added 90 before Bracewell was caught off Michael Rippon for 41. Latham though continued, adding 42 before Ish Sodhi fell for 18, giving Klaassen a third wicket.
Kyle Jamieson was leg before to van Beek next over. Latham was unbeaten on 140, having struck five sixes and 10 fours. He had helped drag his side to 264/9. Van Beek took 4-56 and Klaassen 3-36.
The Dutch began poorly in response. They lost Stephan Myburgh to the fifth ball of their innings, caught and bowled by Doug Bracewell for four. Two balls later, fellow opener Max O’Dowd was caught at slip off Jamieson.
Vikram Singh and Bas de Leede then stabilised things with a stand of 77, until de Grandhomme had Singh caught for 31. The Dutch side were still in the contest even when Blair Tickner had Scott Edwards caught for 6.
But Sodhi removed de Leede (37) before Michael Bracewell, playing in just his second ODI, produced a devastating spell, removing Seelaar, Rippon, and van Beek.
Jamieson bowled Dutt and Sodhi took the last wicket, of Brandon Glover, as the Netherlands were bowled out for 146 in the 35th over. The last six wickets had fallen for 43 runs in just 12 overs. Michael Bracewell was the best of the New Zealand bowlers, with 3-21.
