Resuming Day 3 on 34/3, South Africa needed another 353 runs to make New Zealand bat again. But Tim Southee took five wickets to bundle them out for 111, and New Zealand won the Test match, in Christchurch, by an innings and 276 runs to go 1-0 up in the series.
Rassie van der Dussen was the first to go, bowled by Matt Henry for 9. Barring Temba Bavuma, who scored 41, none of the batters looked comfortable against the pace quartet of New Zealand. Neil Wagner pinned Bavuma leg-before. Soon. Southee dismissed Glenton Stuurman to claim his fifth of the innings and wrap up the game.
In the first innings, Matt Henry had run through the visitors, taking 7-23 to bowl them out for 95. Zubayr Hamza's 25 was the highest score of the first innings, while the rest of the batters could even reach 20.
In reply, New Zealand lost both openers early. Devon Conway made 36 before falling prey to Duanne Olivier. New Zealand sent night watch in Neil Wagner to see off Day 1, alongside Henry Nicholls. On the next day, Wagner made an entertaining 56-ball 49, consisting of seven fours and two sixes.
Nicholls, meanwhile, raced away to his eighth Test century, with a four off Olivier. He fell for 105 when he gave an easy catch to Aiden Markram to become the third victim of Olivier.
But there was no respite for the tourists as Tom Blundell made 96, off just 138 balls, while Henry remained unbeaten on 58. Colin de Grandhomme too chipped in with 42-ball 45.
South Africa 95 (Zubayr Hamza 25; Matt Henry 7-23) and 111 (Temba Bavuma 41; Tim Southee 5-35) lost to New Zealand 482 (Henry Nicholls 105; Duanne Olivier 3-100) by an innings and 276 runs. Player of the Match: Matt Henry.
