South Africa defeated New Zealand by 198 runs in the second Test in Christchurch to level the series. Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, and Marco Jansen claimed three wickets each to skittle out New Zealand for 227.
With 336 needed on the final day, New Zealand needed their overnight batters, Tom Blundell and Devon Conway, to forge a big partnership to avoid a defeat. Blundell and Conway did well in the first session. The latter also played some excellent shots against Maharaj, who was looking dangerous.
But on 92, Conway missed out on a full-pitched delivery from Lutho Sipamla that hit him in the pads. This triggered a collapse, and New Zealand lost their next five batters for just 61 runs.
After lunch, Jansen removed Tom Blundell, Colin de Grandhomme, and Kyle Jamieson with short-pitched deliveries. Blundell top-edged to Temba Bavuma on 44, while de Grandhomme's pull found Wiaan Mulder in deep.
Tim Southee threw his bat at everything, hitting two fours before holing out to Sipamla. South Africa were just a wicket away from the win when rain interrupted play, forcing the umpires to take early tea. When the game resumed, Maharaj dismissed Matt Henry to wrap up the innings.
Saral Erwee was adjudged Player of the Match for his first-innings hundred that set the foundation for South Africa.
