Kyle Verreynne's unbeaten hundred and double-strikes from Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj put South Africa in a commanding position in the second Test match against New Zealand. New Zealand will need to score 332 runs to win on Day 5; they have already lost four wickets.
Verreynne forged crucial stands with Wiaan Mulder and Kagiso Rabada en route his 136 not out before South Africa declared on 354/9, setting a target of 426.
With the pitch having eased out for the batters, the New Zealand fast bowlers were unable to exert pressure in the morning. Verreynne and Mulder (35) batted patiently and added 78 runs for the sixth wicket before Kyle Jamieson got the latter.
But Rabada stood up, hitting four sixes and as many fours in his 34-ball 47. His partnership with Verreynne lifted South Africa from 219/7 to 297/8 in just over 10 overs.
For New Zealand, Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, Neil Wagner claimed two wickets each.
Rabada then struck twice in his first two overs to leave New Zealand reeling at 6/2. They soon became 25/3 when Maharaj bowled Henry Nicholls. Devon Conway has held the fort, and is batting on 60. Tom Blundell is also at the crease, but they have only Colin de Grandhomme and the long tail to follow.
South Africa 364 (Sarel Erwee 108; Neil Wagner 4-104) and 354/9 decl. (Kyle Verreynne 136; Matt Henry 2-81) lead New Zealand 293 (Colin de Grandhomme 120; Kagiso Rabada 5-60) and 93/4 (Devon Conway 60*; Kagiso Rabada 2-17) by 331 runs.
