Imam-ul-Haq's 158 and Azhar Ali's 185 helped Pakistan wear down the Australian attack on Day 2 before they declared the innings at 476/4. When Australia came to bat, the light was not sufficient for fast bowlers to attack. David Warner and Usman Khawaja survived the only over, bowled by Sajid Khan, as Australia finished the day on 5/0.
So far the pitch has helped neither pace nor spin. Pat Cummins & co. decided to bombard Imam and Azhar with short-pitched balls, but the batters did not face trouble playing them. Josh Hazlewood, however, got some reverse swing in the first session.
The third morning will be crucial for Australia. They will face the pace duo of Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah. Afridi boasts a terrific record on this ground. Nathan Lyon bowled 52 overs for only one wicket, but if Sajid and Nauman Ali get some purchase from the pitch, Pakistan might find themselves in a strong position.
Barring Steven Smith and David Warner, the other Australians do not have much experience against spin in the Indian subcontinent. Khawaja, meanwhile, will look to make his homecoming special.
There is a chance of rain on the next two days. Considering how easy the first two days have been for the batters, the match is meandering towards a draw.
