The third Test match between Pakistan and Australia, at Lahore, remains delicately balanced. Australia resumed their first innings on 232/5, with Cam Green on 20 and Alex Carey on eight. The pair added 109 to the overnight score on Tuesday morning before both fell in quick succession. Carey went first, for 67, leg before to Nauman Ali, while Naseem Shah bowled Green for 79.
Mitchell Starc made 13 before becoming Shaheen Shah Afridi's third wicket. He was caught by Nauman. Afridi also got last man Mitchell Swepson, with Naseem claiming his own fourth wicket in the midst of that, bowling Nathan Lyon.
Captain Pat Cummins was 11 not out at the end, but Australia had been bowled out for 391. Naseem took 4-58 and Afridi 4-79.
Pakistan made a steady but slow start to their reply before losing Imam-ul-Haq for 11, leg before to Cummins. Abdullah Shafique and Azhar Ali then combined, and the innings began to take shape. They added 70 before stumps in a careful partnership where the emphasis was clearly not to lose any more wickets in the day.
Pakistan closed the day on 90/1, still trailing by 301 runs but with nine wickets still standing. Shafique will resume on 45 and Azhar on 30.
Pakistan will look to bat all of Wednesday and into Thursday, hoping to establish a first-innings lead and attack the Australians when the pitch, will, from their viewpoint, start to deteriorate.
For the tourists, quick wickets in the morning could tilt the match their way.
Brief scores
Australia 391 (Usman Khawaja 91; Naseem Shah 4-58) lead Pakistan 90/1 (Abdullah Shafique 45*; Pat Cummins 1-27) by 301 runs.
