Peter Philpott has passed away at the age of 86, due to complications from a fall. His death follows the passing of two former Australians – Ashley Mallett and Alan Davidson – in three days.
Philpott played eight Tests during 1960s, picking 26 wickets at an average of 38.46. He made his Test debut against West Indies in Kingston in 1965, where he took 2-56 and 4-109 and scored 22 and 9 to help Australia win by 179 runs. He also returned 5-90 in the first Ashes Test later that year.
Philpott also played for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield from 1955 to 1968, claiming 245 wickets. He also led NSW in the 1963/64 and 1964/65 Sheffield Shield campaigns.
Known for his leg breaks as well as exceptional slip fielding, Philpott went into coaching after retirement and had stints with Sri Lanka, Yorkshire, Surrey and Mosman. He also worked with NSW and South Australia in the Sheffield Shield. Outside cricket, he worked as a teacher for about half a century.
