Mitchell Starc, Australia's fast bowler, has confirmed that he will miss the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India due to a finger injury.
Starc suffered a finger injury on his left hand during the Boxing Day Test against South Africa and missed the series finale.
When asked about his fitness during the Cricket Australia awards, Starc said, "I am on track... still a couple of weeks and then probably meet the guys in Delhi... after... hopefully, a first Test match win... get myself into training over there."
The first Test is scheduled for February 9-13 in Nagpur, and the second for February 17-21 in New Delhi.
Aside from Starc, Cameron Green has been nursing a finger injury since the Proteas' Boxing Day Test victory. Green, on the other hand, will be given every opportunity to prove his fitness ahead of the series opener, according to Australian coach Andrew McDonald.
He hasn't been ruled out, according to McDonald. "We just want to make sure we set all of our players up for success," he says, noting that there isn't much time between now and the four-week check-in around his finger to the start of that test match. We'll see how he does in practise and make that decision when we get on the field.
