Mumbai ended Day 1 of the final of the 2021/22 Ranji Trophy against Madhya Pradesh at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on 248/5 after Prithvi Shaw won the toss and opted to bat. Shaw (48) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (78) scored briskly in the first session, adding 87 for the opening stand at more than three an over. Gaurav Agarwal (2-56) eventually broke through just before lunch, trapping Shaw leg before with a ball that pitched in line and straightened.
Jaiswal, with hundreds in each of his three previous innings, continued with Armaan Jaffer. That partnership broke when Kumar Kartikeya (1-91) had Jaffer (26) caught brilliantly by Yash Dubey at short mid wicket. Suved Parkar (18) lobbed Saransh Jain (2-31) to mid on, while Agarwal had Jaiswal caught at gully. Wicketkeeper Hardik Tamore (24) hit three fours before Jain had him caught at first slip, but Sarfaraz Khan (40*) and Shams Mulani (12*) saw Mumbai off to stumps.
The Chinnaswamy pitch has produced some turn on Day 1, which may become more pronounced as the Test match proceeds. Mumbai would like to score 400.
