Rohit Sharma, the vice-captain of the Indian One-Day International (ODI) side and an opening batsman in the Test team, has been ruled out of the remaining part of the New Zealand tour, due to a calf injury which he sustained while taking a single during Sunday’s (January 2) the fifth T20I at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
The Indian team travelled from Mount Maunganui to Hamilton on Monday morning and while boarding the bus, Rohit was seen limping and in utter discomfort. Later after reaching Hamilton, a scan was done of his injury and the report was not very encouraging, as per the sources who are close to the team management.
Meanwhile, going by the recent performance, Mayank Agarwal, who was a part of the ODI squad in the recent home series against West Indies, is the favourite to replace Rohit in the upcoming three-match series, which starts on February 5 in Hamilton.
However, Shubman Gill, who recently hit a double hundred for India A against New Zealand A, can get a wild card entry in the white-ball side as well. Whereas, for the Test matches, since the selectors are yet to announce the squad, Rohit’s injury might open the door for him.
