On Wednesday, 8 December, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had appointed Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain. This meant Virat Kohli, having already relinquished T20I captaincy will now only lead the Test side, while Rohit will lead India in limited-overs cricket.
A day later, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly broke his silence over the issue. He reasoned that the board and selectors felt a team should have only one captain for both T20I and ODI. Since Kohli had already relinquished the T20I captaincy, the board decided to replace him with Rohit in the ODI. Ganguly also added that the BCCI has already requested Virat to continue leading the side in T20I.
'It's a call that the BCCI and the selectors took together. Actually, the BCCI had requested Virat to not step down as the T20I skipper but obviously, he did not agree. And the selectors then did not feel it right to have two different captains for two white-ball formats,' Ganguly told ANI.
India's next assignment is a tour of South Africa. The first Test begins this Boxing Day.
