Shakib Al Hasan is poised for a crucial test in Chennai, hoping to reverse his bowling suspension and secure a spot in Bangladesh's Champions Trophy squad.

Shakib Al Hasan is currently awaiting the outcome of a second assessment of his bowling action from the testing facility in Chennai, India. This follows his failure to pass the previous evaluation conducted at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom. That assessment resulted in his suspension from bowling in both domestic and international high-level cricket. Shakib faced scrutiny for a suspect bowling action during a county match in England last September, which subsequently led to intervention from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). In alignment with clause 11.3 of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) regulations on illegal bowling actions, his suspension was automatically recognized by the ICC, effectively prohibiting him from bowling in international fixtures as well as in domestic competitions governed by national federations.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is currently holding back on finalizing their squad for the Champions Trophy, largely contingent upon the results of Shakib’s second test. The board president, Faruque Ahmed, expressed interest in having Shakib reintegrated into the squad following a statement made on January 3 regarding his potential return. Recent reports indicate that Najmul Hossain Shanto, the captain of the Bangladesh team, has also expressed support for Shakib’s inclusion in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

Since his last international appearance in two Test matches in India last year, Shakib has experienced a turbulent period. His return to Bangladesh was impeded due to significant student protests against the government, from which he is part of as a member of parliament representing the Awami League party. The political climate in Bangladesh shifted dramatically, leading to the resignation of the government on August 5, after which Shakib had not participated in any international cricket until the reports regarding his bowling action emerged.

After the two Test matches in India, Shakib's bowling action was brought into question during a county cricket game in England, which ultimately led to his suspension in December. Despite these challenges, he continued to participate in franchise cricket in the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka, with the BCB weighing his options for selection during this tumultuous period governed by the interim administration in Bangladesh.

Gazi Ashraf Hossain, chief selector of the BCB, recently noted that he was aware of Shakib undergoing a second test for his bowling action in Chennai, although he could not confirm specific details. He expressed shock at the announcement of Shakib's failure to pass the initial test, acknowledging the urgency of acquiring further information. The chief selector indicated that the board had yet to issue comprehensive directives regarding Shakib's situation, emphasizing the time-sensitive nature of resolving these developments.

Coaching figure Mohammad Salahuddin has also been in touch with Shakib, providing advice through video calls to assist him in refining his bowling action. Salahuddin commented on the knowledge he possesses regarding Shakib’s unique style of bowling, asserting confidence in Shakib's ability to make the necessary adjustments. He explained that the modifications needed for Shakib’s bowling action are neither drastic nor complicated, allowing for a potentially swift resolution.

According to Salahuddin, Shakib’s difficulties with his bowling action arose from an attempt to generate additional spin during the county match in Taunton. The coach observed that excessive workload might have contributed to this situation, suggesting that Shakib needed to utilize his upper body to achieve his desired spin, as opposed to relying adequately on leg strength. Salahuddin emphasized that such pressure often leads bowlers to adjust their technique under certain circumstances, which can result in their form coming into question. He is optimistic that Shakib can correct these issues efficiently.

A successful outcome from the testing in Chennai holds significant implications not only for Shakib Al Hasan but also for the Bangladesh national team, as they prepare for upcoming international engagements including the Champions Trophy. The cricket community closely watches this situation, intrigued by the potential return of one of its prominent players. Ultimately, the focus will remain on ensuring that Shakib meets the required standards to resume his role as a key bowler for Bangladesh.
