The Indian team management has shortlisted Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav and Jayant Yadav to replace the three injured players in the Test squad for their upcoming series in England. Shubman Gill was already ruled out of the series due to a shin injury, while Avesh Khan and Washington Sundar got injured in the practice match against the County Select XI.
Both Avesh and Sundar took the field for County Select XI after some of their players were ruled out for coming in close contact with Covid-19 patients. Khan bowled 9.5 overs before injuring a finger while attempting to stop the ball. Sundar, too, injured a finger while fielding.
Shaw and Suryakumar are currently in Sri Lanka for the ODI and T20I series. Suryakumar, who got his ODI cap on the tour, was named Player of the Series. The T20I series starts on 25 July.
It remains to be seen how the BCCI manages the logistical issues, as Sri Lanka is currently placed in the ‘Red List’ by the UK government.
While Shaw is a like-to-like replacement for Gill, Suryakumar is probably a backup for Ajinkya Rahane, who missed the practice match due to a hamstring injury. Jayant’s last appearance for India came against Australia in 2017.
