Shivnarine Chanderpaul, a former batter for the West Indies, was named the head coach of the USA Women's senior and U19 cricket teams on Sunday.
The 47-year-old, who is based in Orlando, Florida in the United States, recently served as the batting consultant for the U19 West Indies men's team for the U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2022. He is presently the head coach of Caribbean Premier League team Jamaica Tallawahs.
The USA Women's U19 squad will travel to the Caribbean on July 3 for the Cricket West Indies Under-19 Rising Stars T20 Championship, which will take place from July 5 to 13 in Trinidad and Trinbago, therefore Chanderpaul's duty will start right away.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been named as the Head Coach of the National Women's Team and Women's Under 19 Teams, USA Cricket said in a release. This follows the conclusion of the advertised recruiting process.
The legendary Chanderpaul represented the Windies internationally for more than 20 years. He amassed a staggering 20,988 runs at an impressive average of 45.72 in 454 international games, including 41 centuries and 125 half-centuries. In addition, he is one of just two West Indies batsmen to surpass 10,000 runs scored in Test matches.
At the end of 2023, Chanderpaul's 1.5-year contract will come to an end.
"I am thrilled to have been named the Women's Under 19 Team and USA National Women's Team's Head Coach. I am a major supporter of women's sports, and I have closely followed the USA Women's National Team's development, Chanderpaul stated.
"I've enjoyed participating in American cricket throughout the years as an Orlando resident, so to be offered the chance to lead USA Cricket is an amazing one.
The first Under 19 Cricket World Cup will be held in January, and he continued, "I'm really looking forward to combining my 20+ years of international cricket expertise and my recent coaching skills to help the women's teams grow to World Cups in years to come."
The breadth of experience Chanderpaul provides, according to USA Cricket Operations Director Richard Done, will be extremely helpful.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul will serve as the Women's Head Coach for the Women's Senior and U19 Teams and will take them to the international scene, he added. "We are happy to have recruited someone of Shivnarine Chanderpaul's ability," he said.
"Young cricketers in our country are thrilling to watch, and many of them are already having an impact at the senior level. Combining the two jobs will give those players, as they advance, coaching consistency between clubs "Added he.
