Kolkata Knight Riders have appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain for the Indian Premier League 2022. The franchise acquired him for a whopping INR 12.25 crores in the mega auction.
'We are delighted firstly to have been able to successfully bid for Shreyas in the IPL auction and to have the opportunity for him to lead #TeamKKR,' Venky Mysore, CEO & MD of Knight Riders said in a statement. 'He has impressed one and all as a quality batsman at the highest level and we are confident that he will excel as a leader of #TeamKKR.'
Iyer led Delhi Capitals in 2019 and 2020, before being replaced by Rishabh Pant last season. Under him, the Capitals reached their maiden IPL final under his captaincy in 2020.
At Kolkata, Iyer will succeed Eoin Morgan, who could not find buyers for the forthcoming season, and under head coach Brendon McCullum.
