Indian skipper Virat Kohli held in to his second position whereas Australia batsman Steven Smith retained his numero uno position in the latest ICC Test rankings for batsmen released on Monday.
Smith’s tally of 937 points is 34 more than that of Kohli’s 903 points. Moreover, Australia’s Pat Cummins also also retained his number one spot as a bowler in the Test rankings. In fact, both Smith and Cummins played important roles in their Ashes campaign against England that ended in a 2-2 draw with Australia retaining the Urn.
Other players to benefit from the Ashes campaign have been Matthew Wade and Mitchell Marsh from Australia once again. Wade’s two centuries helped him to jump 32 places to 78th in the batsman’s rankings. It is his highest since his 54th rank back in 2013. Marsh, on the other hand, jumped 20 places to 54th courtesy of his five-wicket haul in the final Ashes Test.
David Warner, after his disastrous run with the bat during the series, has slipped down seven places to 24th in the batsman’s rankings. Jofra Archer has broken into the top 40 bowlers after a fabulous outing in the series whereas Sam Curran has jumped six places to 65th position.
Rory Burns and Joe Denly have also made significant progress in the batsmen’s rankings as they jumped to their career best 56th and 57th positions respectively. Jos Buttler, after his knock of 70 and 47 in the two innings of the final Test, has also made it into the top 30 batsmen once again.
