Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee got South Africa off to a solid start before Temba Bavuma struck his 18th Test fifty as they closed the Day 1 of the first Test match against Bangladesh on 233/4.
Elgar and Erwee added 113 runs for the first wicket. Elgar scored 67 before being dismissed by Khaled Ahmed. He hit struck nine fours in the opening hour as neither Taskin Ahmed nor Ebadot Hossain could exert pressure.
Although the Kingsmead surface did not offer movement to the pacers, there was certainly extra bounce. All three fast bowlers went for over three an over, and Bangladesh will expect more from them. They need an early wicket on Day 2 to stop South Africa from putting up a mammoth total.
There is not much batting left after this pair. If Bangladesh manage to remove either Kyle Verreynne or Bavuma early, they can have a go at a long and relatively inexperienced tail.
Thus it becomes important for the overnight pair to bat out at least a session without being separated. Verreynne will resume on 27, and Bavuma is currently batting on 53.
Fantasy Tips
