The first ODI of the three-match series between South Africa and the Netherlands at the SuperSport Park, in Centurion, was called off due to relentless rain.
The Netherlands were set 278, courtesy No. 8 Andile Phehlukwayo’s 22-ball 48, which included six sixes and a four. Earlier, Kyle Verreynne (95) and Zubayr Hamza (56) set the tone, adding 119 for the third wicket after South Africa were reduced to 24/2 in 6.2 overs.
Fred Klaassen (2-45) dismissed both Janneman Malan and Reeza Hendricks inside the Powerplay to provide the Netherlands an excellent start. Verreynne and Hamza held the fort from there, but once they fell, South Africa slipped from 179/3 to 209/7.
David Miller, Khaya Zondo and Wayne Parnell departed cheaply before Phehlukwayo’s blitz and Keshav Maharaj’s unbeaten 16-ball 18 propelled South Africa to a challenging total.
Klassen, Vivian Kingma and Brandon Glover claimed two wickets each, while Timm van der Gugten and Roelof van der Merwe took one wicket apiece.
Only two overs were possible in the Netherlands chase, in which they reached 11/0. Persistent rain then forced both sides to share the World Cup Super League points.
The two sides will again meet on 28 November for the second ODI, at the same venue.
Brief scores: South Africa 277/8 in 50 overs (Kyle Verreynne 95; Fred Klaassen 2-45) vs Netherlands 11/0 in 2 overs (Max O’Dowd 9*). No Result.
