South Africa vs West Indies: First Women’s ODI washed out in Johannesburg Image

The first Women's ODI of the four-match series between South Africa and West Indies in Johannesburg ended without result because of persistent rain.

Multiple bursts of rain halted the West Indies innings after Sune Luus asked them to bat. The innings had to be closed for good after they were 234/3 in 45.3 overs. Deandra Dottin was the star of the show with an unbeaten 158-ball 150, including 18 fours and four sixes. She and Hayley Matthews (51 in 63 balls) added 186 in 200 balls after Rashada Williams (1) and Kycia Knight (1) fell and Stafanie Taylor (12) had to retire hurt.

It was West Indies’ third highest third-wicket stand in ODI cricket, and ninth highest overall.

For South Africa, Shabnim Ismail, Masabata Klaas, and Ayabonga Khaka took a wicket each, while Nonkululeko Mlaba, Chloe Tryon, and Luus bowled 20 wicketless overs. Barring Ismail and Luus, the others went for over six an over.

The revised target for South Africa was 204 in 29 overs. They reached 87/5 in 17.4 overs when rain interrupted play again, this time for good. Mignon du Preez was unbeaten on 13-ball 19, but Laura Wolvaardt, Tazmin Brits (32), Lara Goodall, Tryon and Luus all got out. Karishma Ramharack and Matthews claimed two wickets apiece, while Shamilia Connell had one.

The two sides will again meet on 31 January for the second ODI at the same venue.
