The Sri Lankan spinners shared six wickets to reduce West Indies to 113/6 by the end of Day 2 at Galle. West Indies still trail by 273, with Kyle Mayers (22) and Jason Holder (1) at the crease. Earlier, Sri Lanka could only add 119 runs to their overnight total to finish on 386.
Dimuth Karunaratne and Dhananjaya de Silva started well before the latter got out in bizarre fashion. He stood on his toe to defend a back-of-length ball from Shannon Gabriel and defended with a straight bat just under his eyes. Then, to prevent the ball from bouncing on the stumps, he turned around and swatted his bat twice but failed to connect both times, and ended up hitting the leg stump in the process.
This triggered a collapse. The last seven Sri Lankan batters could only add 105. Karunaratne was the next victim, stumped for 147 while trying to drive Roston Chase. Only Dinesh Chandimal (45) scored anything substantial. Chase finished with five wickets, while Jomel Warrican also managed to take three.
Kraigg Brathwaite (41) and Jermaine Blackwood (20) were watchful in the beginning, playing 20 overs for an opening stand of 46 runs. Lasith Embuldeniya then provided the breakthrough after pinning Blackwood leg-before.
Brathwaite was undone by Ramesh Mendis, who also picked the wicket of Shai Hope (10) and Chase (2). Mayers looked fluent, hitting five fours in his unbeaten 22.
Sri Lanka 386 (Dimuth Karunaratne 147; Roston Chase 5-83) lead West Indies 113/6 (Kraigg Brathwaite 41, Ramesh Mendis 3-23) by 273 runs.
