Persistent rain ruined the first two sessions of Day 1 of the second Test match between Sri Lanka and West Indies at Galle. Sri Lanka closed the day on 113/1, as Pathum Nissanka on 61 and Oshada Fernando on 2.
Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and opted to bat when play eventually began. Sri Lanka handed Charith Asalanka a maiden Test cap, leaving out Dushmantha Chameera. West Indies, on the other hand, brought in Veerasammy Permaul and Kemar Roach for Rahkeem Cornwall and Shannon Gabriel.
As in first innings of the first Test match, Karunaratne (42) and Nissanka batted positively from the onset, giving Sri Lanka a solid start. The West Indies bowlers did not get much assistance from the wicket until Roston Chase caught Karunaratne off his own bowling. The opening pair added 106.
After Karunaratne’s departure, Oshada survived 10 balls before bad light forced early stumps. Only 33.4 overs were possible on the day, and the rain is forecasted on all remaining four days as well.
Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 113/1 (Pathum Nissanka 61; Roston Chase 1-33) vs West Indies.
