Sri Lanka beat Australia by 26 runs as per the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Asked to bat, Sri Lanka reached 220/9 in 47.4 overs when rain stopped play. Australia, set to chase 216 in 43 overs, were 123/3 in the 27th over before their middle order caved in. They were bowled out for 189. The series is now level 1-1 with three ODIs to play.
David Warner (37) got Australia off to a solid start, but his effort turned out to be the highest score, not only for Australia but also in the entire match. Six other Australians scored 14 or more but none of them went past 30. Coming out at 132/5, Glenn Maxwell hit his way to a 25-ball 30, but once he top-edged a pull off Chamika Karunaratne and perished, Australia could add only 19 more to their total. Karunaratne was named Player of the Match for his 3-47, which followed a 17-ball 18.
Earlier, Kusal Mendis (36) and Dhananjaya de Silva (34) added 61 for the third wicket to take Sri Lanka to 96/2, but there was little resistance thereafter as Pat Cummins took 4-35. The only resistance came from captain Dasun Shanaka (34 in 36 balls), and at 199/9 in the 44th over, Sri Lanka were in real danger of getting bowled out. Dushmantha Chameera and Maheesh Theekshana then batted out crucial overs until the rain came, ensuring Australia needed an adjusted target.
