Sri Lankan top-order batsman Kusal Mendis has been arrested for running over and killing a 64-year old cyclist in Colombo. The incident took place on July 5 near Panadura, on the outskirts of Colombo.

The cyclist, a local of the area, was immediately admitted to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

The Horethuduwa police is now conducting an enquiry to determine whether Mendis or the cyclist were under the influence of alcohol. The cricketer is expected to be produced before a court on July 6.

The 25-year old wicket-keeper was a part of the national camp that had started training after the coronavirus pandemic at Pallekele. He has played 44 Tests and 76 ODIs for Sri Lanka, scoring 5646 international runs across formats.

Earlier, Mendis had been named in the 16-player squad that had been picked to take on England in March for a two-Test series. The series, though, was cancelled due to the coronaviris pandemic but the players were allowed to return to practice after a gap of three months as the lockdown was eased in the island.
