After a humdinger in the finals between England and New Zealand, we have come to the end of ICC World Cup 2019. An electrifying event with a sensational final which saw England win the World Cup for the first time, the tournament captured the imagination of quite a few resulting in Channel 4 airing International cricket on free to air television for the first time in 14 years for the finals of the tournament. Here we summarise to you the stats from the World Cup.
Most Runs
Rohit Sharma topped the run charts in the World Cup with 648 runs including five hundreds. He was the lynchpin of India’s batting order at the top and averaged 81 in the tournament. Interestingly, David Warner with 647 runs came one run behind Rohit, the closest the top two run-scorers have been in any World Cup.
Shakib Al Hasan was the other batsman to make over 600 runs. Kane Williamson, the Player of the Tournament, with 578 runs and England players, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes and Jason Roy are the other prominent names in the top 10.
Most Wickets
Mitchell Starc with 27 wickets topped the wicket-takimg chart in the World Cup. Incidentally, he had also topped the chart in the 2015 World Cup – joint most with Trent Boult then.
Starc’s tally of 27 wickets is the most by any bowler in any edition of the World Cup. Lockie Ferguson of New Zealand came second with 21 wickets while Jofra Archer, on his debut World Cup, and Mustafizur Rahman with 20 wickets apiece came joint third. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Amir, Shaheen Shah Afridi were the other Asian bowlers in the top 10. Interestingly, no spinner took more than 11 wickets (Imran Tahir) in the World Cup.
Most Keeper Dismissals
Wicket-keepers had a gala time both behind and in front of the stumps with Tom Latham effecting the most dismissals – 21. Alex Carey came a close second with 20 dismissals.
Latham’s 21 dismissals is a joint record for most dismissals by a wicket-keeper in any edition of the World Cup. Adam Gilchrist in 2003 had effected 21 dismissals. Shai Hope, Safaraz Ahmed, Jos Buttler, MS Dhoni and Mushfiqur Rahim were the others with over 10 dismissals behind the stumps.
Most Catches
Joe Root took the most catches in the tournament – 13 – while Faf du Plessis was the only other fielder with over 10 catches.
Jonny Bairstow with nine came third while Sheldon Cottrell, who made his presence felt in the field with some outrageous catches, and Martin Guptill came joint fourth with eight apiece.
Root’s 13 catches is the most by any fielder in any edition of the World Cup.
Best Partnerships
There were some incredible partnerships in this World Cup with openers themselves putting together several century stands. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow had four century partnerships from the top but the best of the lot belongs to KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma who made 189 against Sri Lanka for the first wicket.
David Warner and Usman Khawaja made 192 for the second wicket against Bangladesh while Joe Root and Eoin Morgan’s 189 against Afghanistan was the best for the third wicket. Shakib and Liton Das’ 189* against West Indies in the only successful 300-plus run chase in this tournament and Neesham – de Grandhomme’s 132 against Pakistan also make the list. Dhoni and Jadeja put on a terrific 116 in the semi-finals against Kiwis for the seventh wicket, albeit in a losing cause.
