Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh, thinks that the Rohit Sharma-led team is the favourite to win Wednesday's match and that if his team defeats the 2007 champions, it will be considered an upset. This is on the eve of their Super 12 encounter in the T20 World Cup versus India.
India will play Bangladesh in a critical Group 2 match at a picturesque Adelaide oval on Wednesday in an effort to get back to winning ways in the tournament after getting completely destroyed by pace and bounce from South Africa's pacers in a five-wicket loss at Perth.
On the other side, Bangladesh enters the game fresh off a thrilling three-run victory over Zimbabwe in Brisbane. India and Bangladesh have faced off in 11 T20I matches, with 10 victories for India and just one triumph for Bangladesh.
"India is the favourite team and has travelled to this country to compete in the (T20) World Cup. We are not the favourites, and we are not in this country to win the World Cup. So, you can see how the issue is one that we are very familiar with. It will be considered an upset if we defeat India. We'll do our best to play cricket and try to shock the odds "Shakib made this statement during the pre-game presser.
Avoiding another huge score from an in-form Suryakumar Yadav at Adelaide would be one of the major tasks for the Bangladesh bowling attack. Suryakumar has scored the most runs in T20Is this year with 985 runs. He is known for his 360-degree style of play and made a superb counter-attacking 68 against South Africa as the rest of the Indian batting order was being destroyed by the Proteas' tall fast-bowling attack.
We haven't held our team, bowling, or batting meetings yet, so we will discuss all those topics when we do our meetings. They have a phenomenal batting order, which we have to overcome to be able to win or do something good, said Shakib. "Well, he's been playing really well for India. Probably their number one batsman in terms of record in the last one year. They got few world-class players which we need to look out for," said Shakib.
Arshdeep Singh is a left-arm pacer, so Bangladesh's batters will have their work cut out for them when he bowls with the new ball. "He was bowling pretty effectively when I first watched him during the IPL, especially with the new ball. In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, he has demonstrated a great deal of maturity. He is a tremendous possibility for India and is already shown a lot of promise "insisted Shakib.
Due to his impressive track record of outswinging left-handed batsmen, India's off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin may wreak havoc with his variations against teams with four of their top six batters being left-handed. Shakib stated that his team will develop strategies to mitigate Ashwin's menace.
"As I already stated, neither our team nor our meetings have been decided. We will be able to learn more if we can hold our meetings. There will be a tonne of topics to go over and lots of plans to make."
Former Indian left-arm spinner Sridharan Sriram serves as a technical consultant for Bangladesh's support team. Sriram worked as Australia's spin bowling coach and is connected to the IPL team Royal Challengers Bangalore. Shakib praised Sriram's influence on the kids despite the team's inconsistent performance in the competition.
"Since he arrived here, in my opinion, he has performed well. He wanted to work on a few particular plans. He has treated the guys well. The way he talks appeals to boys. I believe we played under him in two, four, five, or even even six games. He has performed admirably for this young team so far, and I hope he continues to do so for Bangladesh."
