A hundred from Usman Khawaja and a fifty from Steven Smith put Australia in a commanding position before they declared the innings at 416/8. England then batted five overs for 17 without any loss. Zak Crawley, however, was lucky to survive after edging to David Warner to a no-ball from Mitchell Starc.
Resuming the day on 126/3, Smith and Khawaja kept the English pacers at bay, adding 83 in the first session. Khawaja was dropped early in the innings, when Joe Root failed to grab an easy catch off Jack Leach. Khawaja played inside the line, and the thick outside edge fell to Root after deflecting off Jos Buttler's gloves.
Smith soon completed his 33rd Test fifty, but yet again he failed to convert it into a hundred when he fell to Stuart Broad just after lunch. Since his double century in Manchester more than two years ago, Smith has crossed the double-digit score only once, against India in 2020/21.
Three overs later, Broad had Cam Green caught by Crawley in third slip. Alex Carey then went for a slog off Root and fell for 13. Australia were 285/6 at this point.
Khawaja kept the scoreboard ticking with regular boundaries. He pierced the gap at square leg and ran three to complete his ninth Test century in his first Test match after two and a half years.
He was finally bowled by Broad, who took 5-101 on his comeback, for 137. Mitchell Starc (34*) and Nathan Lyon (17*) then propelled Australia to 416/8.
Australia 416/8 decl. (Usman Khawaja 137; Stuart Broad 5-101) lead England 13/0 (Haseeb Hameed 2*, Zak Crawley 2*) by 403 runs.
