Usman Khawaja became the third player to score a hundred in both innings of a Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He followed his first innings of 137 with an unbeaten 101 in the second on Day 4 of the fourth Ashes Test match to set England an improbable target of 388.
Zak Crawley (22*) and Haseeb Hameed (8*) then survived 11 overs to England to 30/0 by stumps. They need another 358 to win or to bat out the final day to prevent a whitewash.
Khawaja added 179 with Cam Green (74) for the fifth wicket to help Australia recover from 86/4 after Marcus Harris (27), Marnus Labuschagne (29) and Steven Smith (23) failed to convert their starts. They reached 265/6 before Jack Leach (4-84) got Green and Alex Carey in successive balls in the 69th over. Pat Cummins then declared the innings.
With both Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow spending the day off the field with hand injuries, substitute Ollie Pope kept wickets for England and held four catches. Mark Wood (2-65) took the other two Australian wickets.
Earlier in the day, England only managed to add 36 runs to their overnight 258/7 before being bowled out for 294. Leach went first, to Nathan Lyon (2-88). Bairstow (113) did not last long either, and Stuart Broad followed soon, both to Scott Boland (4-36).
Brief scores: Australia 416/8 decl. (Usman Khawaja 137; Stuart Broad 5-101) and 265/6 dec (Usman Khawaja 101*; Jack Leach 4-84) lead England 294 (Jonny Bairstow 113; Scott Boland 4-36) and 30/0 (Zak Crawley 22*) by 358 runs.
