Among the most prolific batsman in Test cricket in recent times, Virat Kohli has been the flag bearer of modern day Test batting with his impeccable consistency across conditions. However, on Sunday, Kemar Roach had him dismissed for a golden duck by forcing an edge through to the keeper off a full length ball that straightened off the deck. Here we take a glance at all of his other eight ducks in Test cricket.
Bridgetown, 2011
In the second Test of his maiden tour to the Caribbean Islands in 2011, Virat Kohli registered his maiden Test duck. The middle-order batsman was befuddled by Ravi Rampaul who generated extra bounce to rap Kohli on the gloves. The Indian batsman was late in bringing his bat and hands down and edged the ball off his glove to the cordon to depart for a two-ball duck.
Melbourne, 2011
Later in 2011, Virat Kohli was caught in the midst of a probing spell by Ben Hilfenhaus. The Australian swing bowler curved one back into Kohli off a length ball and had him trapped in front off the first ball he faced. It was Kohli’s maiden golden duck in the format.
Lord’s, 2014
The 2014 England tour perhaps made Kohli the beast he is today. In a very tough series for the batsman, James Anderson and Stuart Broad worked out a massive chink in his game and kept exploiting it with relentless accuracy. After being dismissed for 25 in the first outing by Anderson, Kohli fell for a golden duck to Liam Plunkett in the second. Having just dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara, Plunkett seamed one back into Kohli first ball to beat hus shouldered arms and hit the stumps.
Manchester, 2014
James Anderson was troubling Virat Kohli right through the 2014 series in England and at Manchester, he had him for a duck with an away swinger. Kohli was caught on the move and the ball took his edge enrout first slip. India were left reeling at 8/3 after Kohli’s dismissal.
Pune, 2017
In the first match of the home series against Australia in 2017, Virat Kohli, who was in good form, was drawn into a loose shot by Mitchell Starc off the second ball he faced. He went for a drive off a wide ball and nicked behind to the slip fielder to be dismissed without troubling the scorers.
Kolkata, 2017
On a pitch made to trouble Sri Lanka’s weak batsmen, India were caught sleeping by Suranga Lakmal’s exceptional new ball spell. The Sri Lankan dismissed KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan early and then went on to produce a peach to trap Virat Kohli in front. Despite a review from the Indian skipper, the replays were against him and he had to walk back for a duck to leave India at 17/3.
The Oval, 2018
In the final Test of the 2018 tour of England, a dead rubber, India were chasing a mammoth fourth innings total and were reduced to 2 for 3. After Anderson created two opening breakthroughs, Broad removed the big fish, Kohli, for a golden duck by exposing his fourth stump weakness yet again.
Melbourne, 2018
Against the run of play at Melbourne in the series against Australia last year, Kohli was caught while attempting a loose shot off his legs against Pat Cummins. The field was set for a disaster like this and Kohli took the bait offered by the Australians. The ball hurried to leg gully where Marcus Harris pouched a neat catch to send Kohli back for a duck.
