Indian skipper Virat Kohli added another feather to his cap on Friday– Day 2 of the second Test against South Africa at Pune– as he became the first Indian captain to score 40 international centuries.
Kohli reached the milestone when he hit Vernon Philander for a boundary down the ground to bring up the 26th century of his Test career. It was his 19th Test century as captain to go with his 21 tons as skipper of the ODI side as well.
Legendary former Australia batsman Ricky Ponting has the most international centuries (41) to his name as captain followed by Kohli now. Former South Africa batsman Graeme Smith is the third in the list with 33 tons to his name. Former Australia Captain Steve Smith is the fourth in the list with 20 international centuries.
Kohli also went past former Pakistani captain Inzamam-ul-Haq’s tally of 25 Test centuries and joined the likes of Gary Sobers and Steve Smith in the list of players with most Test hundreds.
The 30-year-old also went past Dilip Vengsarkar’s tally of 6868 runs to jump to 53rd in the list of most runs in Test cricket.
Kohli is now fourth on the list of Indian batsmen with most Test centuries. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar lead the list with 51, 36 and 34 centuries respectively.
