Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) head coach Sanjay Bangar confirmed that Virat Kohli, the captain of RCB, experienced a knee niggle during their recent match against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday.
The injury occurred when Kohli took a catch to dismiss Vijay Shankar (53) in the 15th over of the Titans' innings. Subsequently, Kohli did not take the field and was seen sitting in the dugout.
Addressing the media in the post-match press conference, Bangar provided an update on Kohli's injury and emphasized the demanding nature of Kohli's recent performances, which may have contributed to the discomfort.
"Yeah, he had a bit of a niggle in his knee. But I don't think there is anything serious. Having scored two back-to-back hundreds within a gap of four days is a special achievement. He is somebody who not only wants to contribute with the bat but even when he is fielding. He did a lot of running around," Bangar stated.
Kohli's injury has raised concerns as he is a crucial player for the upcoming World Test Championship final against Australia, scheduled from June 7-11 in London.
"Forty overs a couple of days ago and today, for 35 overs he was on the field, he was giving his best. So it is going to bother at some point, but I don't think it's anything serious," Bangar added.
In the match against Gujarat Titans, Kohli displayed his exceptional form once again, scoring a second consecutive century (101 off 61 balls) to propel RCB to a total of 197/5. However, Shubman Gill's dazzling unbeaten century (104 off 52) overshadowed Kohli's efforts, leading the Titans to a six-wicket victory and knocking RCB out of IPL 2023.
