England needed a rescue act from the last-wicket pair of Saqib Mahmood and Jack Leach to reach 204 against West Indies in the third and final Test of the series. Different from Antigua and Barbados, the spicy Grenada pitch stripped bare the batting incompetence of the visitors, who were tested for the first time in the series.
Mahmood (49) and Leach (45*) frustrated the West Indies bowlers with a 90-run stand for the last wicket to lift England from 114/9 to 204. Mahmood's dismissal off Jermaine Blackwood brought an end to England's innings as well as the day's play. England must be disappointed for letting the duo fly, but they would have taken this total at the start of the play.
It was a rare failure from Joe Root, who got out for a nine-ball duck to Kyle Mayers. Jonny Bairstow was yet another of the six England batters failed to reach double figures.
West Indies had to wait for over 12 overs to draw the first blood, but wickets fell in a cluster thereafter, as England soon found themselves on 67/7.
Alex Lees battled his way to 31 before edging behind the stumps off Kemar Roach. Chris Woakes (25) also chipped in with a vital contribution but he got out soon after lunch.
