Shafali Verma's first WBBL half-century and disciplined all-round performance from Ellyse Perry helped Sydney Sixers scrap to a five-wicket win against Hobart Hurricanes in Match 4 of the competition at the Bellerive Oval.

After asking the Hurricanes to bat, the Sixers bowlers, led by Perry (2-9) and Maitlan Brown (2-23), restricted them to 125/9. Nicole Bolton and Radha Yadav also claimed two wickets each. Richa Ghosh top-scored in the Hurricanes’ total, with a run-a-ball 46.

Coming to chase, the Sixers were reduced to 14/2 in 2.2 overs after Alyssa Healy (3) and Ashleigh Gardner (3) departed cheaply. Perry (27) and Verma (57) then forged a 63-run stand to steady the ship before Nicole Bolton (17*) and Maitlan Brown (4*) sealed the win with three balls to spare. Molly Strano finished with excellent figures of 4-0-19-3.

Match 5, Perth Scorchers v Brisbane Heat

Perth Scorchers 137/7 in 20 overs (Mooney 40; Jonassen 3-16) beat Brisbane Heat 137/9 in 20 overs (Harris 41; Mills 3-28) by Super Over. Player of the Match: Alana King.

Perth Scorchers began the WBBL 2021 with a thrilling Super Over win against Brisbane Heat in Match 5 of the competition in Hobart.

Before that, Jess Jonassen's 3-16 and Nicola Hancock’s 1-16 helped the Heat restrict the Scorchers to 137/7 after they were put in. In reply, the Heat were well in control in 87/1 in 9.5 overs. Lilly Mills (3-28) then cleaned up Jonassen to trigger a collapse. The Heat lost their next seven wickets in just 43 before finishing on 137/9.

In the Super Over, bowled by Marizanne Kapp, Anneke Bosch smacked 11 runs from four balls, and set the target of 13 for the Scorchers. But Sophie Devine got the job done with two balls to spare after hitting two sixes off Jonassen.
