Let us take a look at the highlights of Match 5 and 6 of the inaugural edition of Women’s Hundred that took place on 25 July.
London Spirit v Oval Invincibles, Lord’s
Oval Invincibles 134/7 in 100 balls (Capsey 59; Dattani 2-23) beat London Spirit 117/7 in 100 balls (Knight 40; Van Niekerk 3-30) by 17 runs. Player of the Match: Alice Capsey.
Alice Capsey, 16, guided Oval Invincibles to register their second successive win, by beating London Spirit by 17 runs in Match 5 of the Women’s Hundred, at Lord’s.
Coming to open, Capsey hit 10 fours in her 41-ball 59 to help Invincibles reach 134/7 after they were invited to bat. Dane van Niekerk (29 runs off 35 balls) played second fiddle to Capsey in their 80-run fifth-wicket stand to recover the innings after they slipped to 29/3.
Naomi Dattani was the pick of the Invincibles bowlers, with 2-23, while Deepti Sharma, Freya Davies, Deandra Dottin, Charlotte Dean all claimed a wicket apiece.
In reply, Heather Knight top-scored with 29-ball 40, but did not get enough support as Spirit finished on 117/7. Danielle Gibson (30* off 13) played a breezy cameo but it came all too late. Van Niekerk did the most damage with ball for Invincibles, with 3-30.
Manchester Originals v Birmingham Phoenix, Old Trafford
Birmingham Phoenix 114/9 in 100 balls (Jones 31; Lamb 3-16) beat Manchester Originals 93/8 in 100 balls (Kaur 49*; Gordon 3-14) by 20 runs. Player of the Match: Kirstie Gordon.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s unbeaten 47-ball 49 was not enough for Manchester Originals as they suffered a 20-run defeat to Birmingham Phoenix, in Match 6 of the Women’s Hundred, at Old Trafford.
Opting to bat, Amy Jones continued her form with a 17-ball 31 to take Phoenix to 114/9. Emma Lamb (3-16), Sophie Ecclestone (2-14) and Laura Jackson (2-26) kept taking wickets in regular intervals for Originals.
Coming to chase, the Originals lost both Lizelle Lee (7) and Emma Lamb (4) early, to Kirstie Gordon (3-14). Barring Kaur, no batter scored in excess of 20 as they were restricted to 93/8. Georgia Elwiss (2-27) and Abtaha Maqsood (2-14) picked up two wickets each for Phoenix.
