Indian Wicket-Keeper Wriddhiman Saha, who completed 100 Test dismissals in the recent Day/Night Test against Bangladesh at Kolkata, underwent a surgery on Tuesday to fix a fracture he sustained on his right-hand finger during the match. However, India don’t have a Test assignment until the two-match series in New Zealand in February next year and Saha is expected to recover by that time.
“The BCCI Medical Team consulted a hand and wrist specialist and it was suggested that Saha undergoes a surgical fixation of the fracture,” the Board stated in a press release.
“Subsequently, he underwent successful surgery in Mumbai on Tuesday and will soon commence his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy, Bengaluru,” it added further.
Saha had also sustained a similar injury during the home Test series against South Africa but had recovered to play in the series against Bangladesh.
The 34-year-old also suffered a career-threatening shoulder injury during IPL 2018 which forced him to undergo surgery in England and take a long layoff as a result of that. Rishabh Pant became India’s preferred choice in his absence and the youngster made full use of the opportunity as he scored two centuries in England and Australia.
But Saha was picked over Pant as soon as he recovered and that gave ample idea about who India’s preferred wicket-keeping choice is. However, it remains to be seen how the veteran keeper recovers this time around.
